Ice Cream Entrepreneur On Embracing Her Filipino Roots
"When you start realizing that they have stories behind what they're eating or what memory that triggers, or any sense of how that weaves your whole family together, it becomes way more magical."
Christy Cunanan, a first generation Filipino American, would be given a traditional lunch to take to school. Other kids would negatively react, "What is that?!" Christy, yet to develop a sense of identity that associated with her traditional lunch, discarded it. It wasn't until she began actively investigating the stories and memories behind the foods her parents and grandparents ate that she began embracing her culture. Food became her gateway to appreciation for her Filipino heritage and she wanted to provide the same for others. Christy is the owner of Cheeri Cheeri, a Filipino ice cream pop-up shop that embraces every patron with the same hospitality and community that Christy grew up with. Storytelling is at the heart of Cheeri Cheeri, where you are lured in by the Ube ice cream and leave with a cheerful memory.
